'Landminds, Landmines'

This is a first for me.  Realism, that is.  I used a photograph as inspiration for this painting.  A friend sent me the photo with a short story to accompany the picture.  The story goes like this:

Barbara Walters, reporting for the news show 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan conflict and was told by the Afghani women that they wanted to change some of their oppressive customs.  She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.  Ms. Walters returned to Kabul several years after the American invasion of Afghanistan and observed that women still walk behind their husbands, despite the overthrow of the oppresseve Taliban regime, the women now seem happy to maintain the old custom.  Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, "Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?"

The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said, "Land mines."

Hence, the inspiration of this painting, 'Landminds, Landmines'.  Women who know their place.  Life in Afghanistan.

In my own personal opinion, it is time for American troops to be fully withdrawn from the territory of Afghanistan.  And we also need to stop the drone bombings in Pakistan and elsewhere.  We are not making Americans safer with drone bombings, though we are keeping the hatred of the anti-America sentiment in tact.
